Bergren Forum - Likin Simon-Romero, “Beyond Monopoly: What Can We Learn From Modern Board Games?”

During the occupation of Poland during World War II, the Borsuks found themselves in hard times. The Nazi occupation forces' strategy was to put an end to the intellectual Polish life. Famous topologist Karol Borsuk, who struggled to keep his university running, was ultimately imprisoned and went into hiding after escaping. Borsuk, with his wife, designed and made copies by hand of a game called “Animal Husbandry”, selling many copies. Except for one copy in a different location, all copies were destroyed during the 1944 Warsaw rebellion. The game is not about war, but about trading farm animals; there is little to no player confrontation in the game, starting what now we call Euro games. In this forum, I will talk about how and what we can learn from board games.

The Bergren Forum takes place every Thursday lunchtime during the semester from 12:15 pm to 1:00 pm in Nevins Theater. You're welcome to bring your own lunch. Tea and coffee will be provided.
